Monday morning, before tiger, I would've had at least 3 pages worth of stories to catch up on from the night before. Now I don't even have to go a page and a half before I'm caught up. And most of the stories are people complaining about tiger. Can we please just mark this one down as a failure and return to the old thing?

That's never going to happen.
The process is the same with each of the comment system generations.
The new system is buggy and unappealing
A good chunk of people leave, never to return. Content drops
They slowly work out the kinks, and modify the system to be less crap
New people fill in where old have left, and content slowly builds up until it surpasses previous highs
They break the system again in the name of change for change's sake
